About The 2010 Stan Gibbs Cape Cod Canal Fisherman's Classic Tournament

The Stan Gibbs Cape Cod Canal Fisherman's Classic is an "Invitation Only" fishing tournament exclusive to the waterways of the shore bound area of the Cape Cod Canal.

The purpose of the event is to promote among fishermen, sportsmanship, comradely, & community involvement while preserving the history and environment of the Cape Cod Canal.

The tournament was established in 2004 to recognize Stan Gibbs for his contributions of lure design and development made here along the canal.

The seven mile stretch along each winding shoreline provide deep holes with fast currents that produce 14 miles of world class bluefish and striper fishing.

We began with sixty-five fishermen, and now in 2010, have just under two-hundred vying for the coveted "Gibby Cup."

The month long tournament in October, referred to by many as "Hawgtober", is set to coincide with the striped bass fall migration to there winter breeding grounds in the Chesapeake Bay.

At any time during this period, huge schools of large stripers traverse this great waterway making for the best fishing one will ever encounter.

We begin each year with a "Welcome Back Saxatilis" (Latin for striper) a spring cookout and registration for the fall tournament.

Incorporated in the spring cookout is a 36 hour fishing tournament where the winner receives "The Kujig Award," named in honor of renowned canal fisherman Stan Kuzia, who revolutionized the art of jigging the canal with his custom made "Kujig bucktails."

Fish entered in this tournament are donated to the local food pantry.

The Stan Gibbs Fisherman's Classic also coordinates a Canal Clean-Up Day with the Corps Of Engineers.

We ride our custom fishing bikes, with gear, in the sponsored Bourne Firefighters 4th of July Parade, and promote "Hookin-Up & Hangin-Out," a huge flea market dedicated to raising funds for the Fisherman's Statue.

Following the conclusion of the "Hawgtober" tournament, the season culminates with an awards breakfast at the Brookside Country Club.

A year end video with music and photos of events throughout the year and amazing snap shots of fisherman casting and catching stripers makes for great fun.

We end our season with the presentation of the "Gibby Cup" to the overall winner.
